Upper South Studio Launches New Fabric Collection

December 30, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - Upper South Studio has announced its first foray into the residential realm with The Priory Project, a new line of luxury silks in six patterns.

The new fabric collection features a range of sumptuous silk fabrics, hand-crafted and evolved from 17-century-inspired drawings by company founder, Laurence Rosen. Upper South Studio has been a renowned producer of custom fabric for 30 years straddling all industries from hospitality and corporate to gaming and healthcare.

''The Priory Project started as an exploration into the world of printmaking,'' explained Rosen. ''I was fascinated by antiquities and spent time traveling to Peloponnese in southern Greece to view private collections and small regional repositories of artifacts. Many of the objects were chipped and missing pieces. They also were often barely visible behind dusty glass cabinets and hidden in unlit back rooms. I tried to capture this perspective of imperfect beauty in The Priory Project designs.''

Some of the patterns invoke the bubbled fissures of Venetian glass, the blisters and cracks of Sung Dynasty ceramics as well as antiquarian patinas and ecclesiastical motifs.

In addition to founding Upper South Studio, Rosen also created Chiron Press in New York City where he printed and published limited-edition graphics after his graduation from the Yale School of Art and Architecture.
