Derketsch, Ginsburg Join Fabricut's Design Team
February 2, 2005
NEW YORK, New York — Through a series of focused product expansions and savvy people moves, trade sources note that Fabricut is growing into a more important player in what has historically been a two horse jobber race, especially on the East Coast U.S.
As an American jobber, Fabricut was always strongest in the Midwest and West Coast domestic markets but now it is gaining share on the East Coast as well. Traditionally, the short list of jobbers on the East Coast includes Kravet and Robert Allen due to sheer volume but fabric people are talking quite a bit more about, Fabricut and Duralee coming on strong.
As part of its growth scenario, the Tulsa, Oklahoma based Fabricut is now opening an office at 267 Fifth Avenue in New York according to Nina Butkin, vice president & director of design. She also confirmed that longtime Fabricut consultant Irwin Ginsburg (since he sold Anju Woodridge to P. Kaufmann) has been one member of a team involved in the design of the Vervain line, the company's high-end brand.
"Irwin has been a significant contributor to this team," Butkin said. Ginsburg will be working out of the New York office. Fabricut, Inc. based in Tulsa, Oklahoma has four brands: Fabricut, S. Harris, Vervain and Fabricut Contract. In addition, Butkin said that Fabricut has retained the services of MJD Texstyles, an independent design firm owned by Mindy Derketsch. By working with Derketsch, Fabricut expects to further expand its upholstery ranges. Butkin confirmed that Derketsch is developing a collection of colorbooks that will be positioned between Fabricut's Colorations colorbooks and the upholstery in the Vervain collection. The collection Derketsch is working on has not yet been named.
Prior to joining Fabricut as a consultant in January, Derketsch designed three collections for Carole Fabrics (a Hunter Douglas division in Augusta, GA) where she was working as an independent consultant for the past three years. Before that, she worked fulltime exclusively for Kravet Fabrics Corp.
Derketsch's other client is a U.S. based wovens mill where she is a color consultant.
