BFCA Holds Conference of Olympic Proportions

March 13, 2008

LONDON, United Kingdom – On March 3rd, the British Contract Furnishing & Design Association (BCFA) held a gathering at the BERR Conference Centre about business opportunities that would arise with the coming London 2012 Olympics. Over 100 representatives from the furnishing industry gathered to discuss how the Olympics would affect the industry as well as how it could best prepare for the influx of business due to the games.

The seminar addressed key issues like innovation, design and the post-2012 legacy. "I realise that 2012 seems like a lifetime away," explained Colin Watson, BCFA managing director and seminar chairman, "but, in a design-led sector such as ours, we must continue to adopt the long-term view. It is essential that we encourage our members - and indeed the industry at large - to maximise business opportunities during the run-up to the London Games."

Speakers Mary Nicholls of the London Development Agency and Derek Wilson of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic & Paralympic Games stressed the importance about using the games as a platform to stress the innovation and creativity that London's furnishings industry has to offer international buyers.

David McKay, of Bovis Lend Lease, discussed about plans to convert the Oplympic Village into a real community after the games, with residential buildings, hotels, a school, and a mall, and the massive construction this project will entail as well as the bidding opportunities it will present.

The seminar was hosted by the BCFA in partnership with Business Link Kent, and carried endorsement by the BFC, FIRA, OFAS, BIDA and ACID.

The BFCA has established a helpdesk to answer questions about the 2012 preparations.
