Wearbest Unveils Chinese-Made Line; Brings on New Designer

August 28, 2003

GARFIELD, N.J. – Wearbest Sil-Tex Mills has unveiled a collection of Chinese-made silk blends. The upholstery weaver has been privately showing the range to customers in its New York-based design studio since December, said Wearbest president Irwin Gasner.

Wearbest officially introduced the line to the trade at the Furniture Market in April. Since then, the company has been taking orders for the silks from its jobber customers and from the residential high end.

The products, which Gasner said offer luxury and strength, are constructed of 70 percent silk and 30 percent mercerized cotton. Wearbest will continue to gradually grow the collection. "We have many commitments for additional products we are designing."

The company does not own the China-based plant where it manufactures the line, and Gasner would not name the owner or the Chinese city where the facility based.

Meanwhile, guided by newly hired design director, David Byers, Wearbest is putting together new warp collections. "We are looking into new yarns and this is both for our mill here as well as what we are weaving overseas: a silk collection," Gasner said.

Byers began working at Wearbest on January 1 after Michael Koch left his post as executive vice president in charge of design to work independently (see page 56).

"David is very much about creating new looks for what we will be doing in China as well as responsible for broadening the Wearbest product line and what we are producing in our own mill," said Gasner.
