Téxteis Penedo Builds Private Label Business
August 13, 2002
Guimãraes, Portugal — The Téxteis Penedo Group, known as a bedding and decorative fabric mill, is growing its business by focusing on niches, according to Xavier Leite, owner of the privately held company. The most recent niche effort by the group is supplying bedding to furniture stores in Europe. To this end, Leite has established a separate sales division in France under the Isadora brand and in Italy under the Maxitex and Penedo Italia brands.
While competition from Pakistan, Indonesia, China and Vietnam have cropped up, Leite said the 2005 market opening would present opportunities for companies with high end products.
"When the market opens in a few years, China will begin to import better goods and brands they don't make.
"I am sure we will have product for export to China produced by our companies. Companies that are organized to supply better product to China will succeed in the future."
Meanwhile, the group, with sales of $50 million annually, has established itself as an important manufacturer of private label bedding and upholstery for high end brands, including Mulberry Home in the U.K.
Téxteis Penedo also converts finished bedding, table linens, fabric and curtains under six different brand names. Its customer base includes private label for importers, distributors and catalog retailers and department stores worldwide.
The company also manufacturers or converts medium to high end items, including jacquard and dobby upholstery. In an unrelated business activity, Téxteis has become the distributor of Ricoh business machines and software in northern Portugal under the name of Norfax.
Téxteis is the European licensee of the Coca Cola Company in all bedding except the blanket category.
Under a different name, Téxteis Penedo sells readymades in the U.S.A. and Europe. It has a sales office at 261 Fifth Ave. in New York City and sells to several catalog retailers including Lands End in the U.S.A. Téxteis Penedo exports high end bedding lines to Japan, Australia, New Zealand. Some of Téxteis Penedo's other customers include Eurotas of England; Isku of Finland, Casa Bonita of Australia and Selkon of Japan. F&FI
