Turkey Winning Battle Against Cheap Chinese Products
January 13, 2003
Istanbul - In spite of an unstable currency, the impact of cheaper Chinese products and the need to import all oil-based components, Turkish textile producers now dominate the world market for better quality voile curtain fabrics and readymades.
In addition, a growing number of textile producers in Turkey are artfully creating jacquard upholstery fabrics for export.
In fact, export is the mantra word for all Turkish producers today since they cannot profitably sell their products to the local market that is still reeling from a greatly devalued Turkish Lira. As much as 70 percent of the production in some textile companies are geared for export today.
''Getting something cheap doesn't mean you'll make a profit,'' said Yilmaz Kucukcalik, principal of the firm bearing his family name. He refers to cheap Chinese exports flooding the market worldwide. ''If every retailer has the same cheap Chinese product, the business goes down.''
That seems to be the feeling about China in Turkey -cheap products won't make it for long. Turkey, meanwhile, is concentrating on producing better goods at slightly better prices. Most European and American importers are buying voile from Turkey today and upholstery too is rising. The Turkish are sparing no expense to increase their factories and machinery investments to insure a bright future in this business.F&FI
