Satin Textile Workers Aid Tsunami Survivors

December 29, 2004

BANGKOK, Thailland – The tsunami which has taken so many lives in Asia has inspired selfless acts of kindness in many places which should be recognized.

In just one example, the workers of Satin Textiles, the largest textile manufacturer in Thailand, are putting in extra hours without pay to produce blankets and tents for the survivors of one of the worst natural acts of destruction in our history. The Thai vacation spots of Phuket and Pui Pui island in the Indian Ocean were hit very hard and as well as many other locations.

"The death toll now topples more than 4,000, in Thailand alone, and it's likely to increase to more than 10,000," says Schle Wood, owner of Satin Textiles.

"We are lucky right here in Bangkok," and he says all his friends and family are safe. "Actually a friend of mine and my nephews planned to go for a sailing trip in Phuket. They left for the airport in the morning of the disaster (December 25) but they could not manage to board the plane due to a flight delay with no further schedule posted, since the incident had just erupted 30 minutes before. They are extremely lucky in this case. I weep for the tragedy."

Currently, death toll rates are estimated at around 100,000.
