Sampedro Focuses on Growing International Bedding Market
January 5, 2001
Lordelo, Guimarães (Portugal) — Although most expensive home textiles made from linen are still sold in very light colors, the market is seeing more prints and contemporary designs and colors, according to Sampedro, the biggest linen manufacturer in Portugal.
The main product from Sampedro is bedlinen aimed at the high/medium end of the market. The company is perhaps best known for its traditional and classic designs, although more contemporary prints are also offered.
With 250 employees, a turnover of $13 million and stable production, Sampedro is a member of Masters of Linen, the European linen marketing association.
But while linen is still the most important fabric used by the mill, representing around 20% of raw material costs and sourced from Northern Ireland and Italy, qualities are also produced in 100% cotton, polyester/cotton as well as 100% linen.
Tablecloths and bathroom towels have become increasingly important, especially for the contract sector, which now accounts for about 20% of sales.
Some 45% of production is exported, principally to the U.S.A., Spain, Switzerland and the rest of Europe. About 18-20% of sales are made outside Europe, and the main competition comes from Italy.
All finishing processes are offered, with the latest machines from Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
"Bedding, still our most important sector, is growing, with consumer going for higher qualities," said general manager José Machado.
