KINGS MOUNTAIN, North Carolina — As of June 1, STI, one of the few remaining North American upholstery mills, has signed a design consultancy agreement with Glen Read Designs of Beverly Hills, California and LKP Design Associates of Hickory, North Carolina, to design, color, and merchandise new upscale fabric designs that will be produced by STI.
The two design firms will work as partners in complementary roles on the project. Glen Read, of Glen Read Designs will be primarily in charge of fabric designs, while LKP Design Associates studio will work heavily in the areas of color, color coordination and color and lifestyle forecasting. Larry Payne and Peter Maxwell of LKP Design Associates as well as Glen Read will work out of the LKP Design Associates Hickory, North Carolina studio, where they will also collaborate on furniture designs.
Glen Read has designed fabrics for Sunbury Textile Mills, Doblin, Cone Mills and most recently as an independent royalty designer working at the Mastercraft division of Joan/Mastercraft Fabrics. Glen has also been drawing and successfully marketing his own furniture designs to manufacturers. For the past thirty years, LKP Design Associates, and /or Larry Kenneth Payne Inc., has consulted and designed for Doblin, Mastercraft, David Rothschild, Bassett, Henredon, Drexel Heritage, Hekman/Woodmark, Sherrill Furniture Co., and Weiman/Preview.
The new product will be marketed under the Glen Read Designs for STI label.
"We hope to have some of the new jacquard products available at Showtime," said Sean Gibbons, one of the principals of STI said. "We felt it was time to move up to a new level of design sophistication and this association will get us there."
STI has previously produced fabric for primarily plains and in the past few years pillow patterns at popular price points. "These body cloths have been important for STI, and will continue to play a large role in the overall product scheme at STI, however, we plan to add style with unique original jacquard designs and lead the market place in color instead of being at the tail end of it," said Glen Read who added, " we are excited about working with STI, these guys are a team of true professionals who have recognized that it is time to move on and include some upper-end product in their line."
Regarding their collaboration with STI, Larry Payne, chief designer of LKP Design Associates said, "Glen and I have known each other for nearly twenty years, we knew that some day we would find a way to work together. This is a great way to do it. We give each other energy—we both love furniture, we both love fabrics."
