Prosetex Offers First Open Line

August 6, 2002

Como - Prosetex broke with its 35-year tradition for weaving specials only by producing its first open line collection of upholstery fabrics.

Prosetex unveiled the new line at the Ratti mansion, the villa Sucota on the south end of Lake Como during Proposte. Normally, Prosetex maintains a low profile preferring to see customers at its mill in Bulciago, 30 minutes from Milan in Lecco and 45 minutes from Linate Airport.

It is also studying the possibility of introducing a contract line in Trevira®CS.

Corrado Proserpio is spearheading this effort. He works with his father Ettore Proserpio and uncles Elio and Luigi. There are other family members in the business as well but to a lesser degree than the three.

"People say they are tired of buying chenille but they still buy it in higher end," said Corrado. "The chance to produce novelty yarns for chenille is great. We''re planning more silk and silk look fabrics in the future."

As part of the new ''open'' effort, Prosetex has added new finishing in house in Lecco. The process features elephant skin-E-skin and crushed velvet damask chenilles. It utilizes 55 double-width looms and a total of nearly 100 looms including jacquard velvet and dobby units. It back coats its own flame retardant coatings for the contract market but dyes and spins yarn with outside contractors.

The new collection consisted of 250 SKUs. The line consists of four groupings; Marco Polo, a silk collection of jacquards and plains; 20 plus items in five color ways each; Danachia, a lampasse grouping mixed with plains; Il Magnifico, plains and semi plains with heavy textured chenille; Serendipity, a piece dyed plain and jacquard chenille and boucle with the Tuscany look, large florals and structured plains.

All of the lines are priced from 10-15 Euros. Prices to the wholesaler are lower, Corrado said. Furniture manufacturers and drapery buyers are also targeted with the new lines. In order to boost sales of the new open lines, Prosetex hired Stuart Schneider as its international sales manager in September, 2001. Previously, he worked for Chatham Mills in North Carolina but he has since moved to Lecco, Italy where he covers the U.K. and other international markets. He covers the world''s wholesalers and furniture manufacturers including Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

For Decosit, Prosetex plans two new lines and expects to display its collections in a hotel.
