Portuguese Textiles To Showcase Potential As Partnerland

January 5, 2001

The international image of Portuguese textiles is improving and the country has become increasingly important in global markets.

With a population of just 10 million, Portugal has in recent years looked to rest of Europe and the U.S.A., as well as other countries worldwide, as major markets for its textile products.

So successful has this export drive been that Portugal is now the world's third-largest exporter of home textiles and the number one in Europe.

In recognition of this achievement, Portugal will be the Partner Country of Heimtextil 2001. Under the motto "Sense and Ability," around 100 Portuguese producers will exhibit in Frankfurt in January on a total of 4,500 square meters of floorspace.

"Visitors will have the chance to understand and discover Portugal via their senses, with taste, smell and sounds as well as pictures and fabrics," said Maria Alberta Canizes of Investimentos, ComÈrcio e Turismo de Portugal (ICEP), the Portuguese commerce and tourism bureau.

"Ability stands for our hand-crafting skills, our design and creative abilities, especially in the field of home textiles. We will also inform visitors that we are capable of adapting easily to their needs."

With a focus on creativity, expressiveness and emotion, Portugal will demonstrate that it is not just a producer of high-grade goods but also a country that can be innovative and creative.

"In Portugal, you can find high quality, quick response and good service," said Canizes. "We can compete with the best European products and manufacturers."
