Patrick Geysels Reveals What's In Store for Decosit 2004

July 6, 2004

BRUSSELS – Within the trends, there is one totally new story, under the header "New Values, New Tradition." This theme refers to the fact that a committee of international trend specialists states that a number of brands which were considered old-fashioned are clearly "back in business." Therefore, we bring this trend story in Hall 9, where we focus on a number of characteristics within the trends.

Besides "New Values, New Tradition," there is also the totally new, more technical idea of Decotec, which came up during the evaluation of DecoContract. What we saw is that we should give more attention to both new materials and new techniques. This means we will set up a permanent exhibition in Hall 12, in close cooperation with the exhibiting companies. The aim is to put [new] textiles at the center of attention again and reach a new kind of visitor.

New Values, New Tradition

Out of its analysis of trends, the committee of international specialists announced "luxury" as the theme for the years 2005-2006. Luxury means taking time to reflect on the philosophy in design and the craftsmanship in production. Designers of old who remained true to these principles – working with the noblest materials, the loveliest pigments, the traditional techniques – are "hot" again. Big-name designers and deluxe brands who keep working in their own distinctive style with determination to translate that style into the best textiles are experiencing a revival, such as Swarowski, Misssoni or Gianfranco Ferré.

Worth mentioning is that we award special prizes for this "new tradition." Therefore, Decosit has asked all participants to submit products that pay extra attention to craftsmanship, noble materials and drafting. The winning products receive a place in the "slow down room" at the trend forum, a place to rest and luxuriate.

As part of its LUX 05/06 trend project, Decosit explicitly emphasizes quality and craftsmanship, which go hand in hand with innovation. LUX is Latin for "light" and means opulence – luxury. LUX reflects the contradictions of the here and now, confronts what is material and what is immaterial between mind and reality. Luxury also stands for time, the possession of what is finite. In short, under LUX, we find the opulence of textile and touchables, of cuddly soft environments, and see that the luxuriance of craftsmanship is up and coming.

LUX 05/06 consists of four themes: wake-up, play the game, slow down and time out. These stand for the four times of the day, four different light angles, four times to take time out and enjoy. Under wake-up, we find fresh morning light that creates peace and time to lead our fingers in crafting the artisan's artifice. [Sun]light, which animates our play, is classified under play the game, while light that breaks up the velveteen night finds its place under slow down. Finally, time out stands for light that casts a haze over the nights ecstasy.

Decotec: a new project highlighting innovative materials and techniques

Decotec is a project that is geared towards textile materials for the interior, within our target groups Decosit and DecoContract, with diverse groups of products qualifying. These can be "conduits of emotion" such as light, aroma or heat and cooling, elastic materials, technical functionality – such as water-repellent, stain-repellent or antiallergenic properties, vandalism-proof qualities, durability or abrasion resistance. These specific collections will be displayed in Hall 12, where we also find the DecoContract range on display. This year, DecoContract emphasises fabrics & furnishings specially designed for the hospitality sector.

Why Decotec? This initiative originates from the fact we see the ever increasing importance of creativity and technical innovation in interior textiles and materials. Decotec's aim is to generate a database, in which innovations in the world of interior textiles are shown to a professional audience. Decotec wants to show the offer of new materials in a clearly structured and educative way. Visitors to this project will not only be able to feel new materials, but can also consult the specific properties of these materials in an almost scientific – but at the same time accessible – way.

In order to bring a picture that is as complete as possible, Decotec will coordinate with the exhibitors at both Decosit and DecoContract. The reason for this is that we suppose there are a lot of hidden treasures in what is on display. It's Decotec's goal to detect these treasures. But there is more: Decotec also wants to investigate other databases and other sectors, and in doing this wants to create an inventory of interesting developments for the sector of textiles for the interior.
