NEWH to Hold 'Green' Seminar
April 10, 2007
BOSTON, Massachusetts – After a long period of lying dormant, the New England Chapter of NEWH, The Hospitality Industry Network, is getting back on its feet.
On Thursday, April 19, the New England Affiliates chapter will hold an event at the Hyatt Boston called, "Is Sustainable Attainable?" At the event, David Mahood, an NEWH sustainable committee team member and principal of Olive Designs, will lead the seminar.
Maryann Lovell, a member of the New England Affiliates chapter, said that this will be the fourth meeting that the New England Affiliates chapter has held. After about 8 – 10 meetings, she said the chapter will take steps toward becoming officially recognized by NEWH.
"I was on our NEWH board years ago when we had a New England chapter, and we couldn't get a good mix," said Lovell. "It was mostly vendors, but we're reaching out to designers and we're doing a green hospitality design seminar. We're trying to make the meetings more educational."
"We've had a real need for this," said Lovell. "I've been a member of the greater New York chapter, and as a networking tool, it has been so valuable for me over the years. I think it brings more value when we do educational meetings. We try to encourage networking amongst everyone."
As part of the effort to get the New England chapter recognized, the upcoming seminar will focus on forward-thinking design and technology. According to Lovell, Mahood is a green manufacturer and consultant who helped draft the green resource directory that is accessible on the NEWH website. His firm also specializes in green technology.
"It is really interesting," said Lovell about the seminar. "They talk about ways that specific properties address trying to be more energy-efficient in using fluorescent lighting and water usage."
In addition to the seminar, attendees will be taken on tours of the new Nexus Green Resource Center, which is walking distance from the hotel.
"I think it will be a great forum," said Lovell. "I've had a number of designers call saying they wanted to learn more about sustainable design."
