April 26, 2002

Tella Goes For Over-the-Edge Looks, Using Leather, Faux Skins, Metallics

Medford, MA (USA) - Kravetcouture unveiled its first collection under the direction of Cynthia Tella Design Inc. at a multi-media presentation in January. The collection is targeted to fashion-conscious designers and their clients.

"The object was to dress sofas and home furnishings in the same over-the-edge looks as the world''''s greatest dress designers use with high end but not trendy couture fashion," Tella said during the presentation to about 50 magazine editors and publishers. "The thought was to bring high fashion into the home inspired by New York''''s Seventh Avenue and Europe.

"With Kravetcouture, every effort is being made to challenge the designer with modern and exciting fabrics," Tella said. The 1,200-SKU collection is Kravet''''s ''''crown jewel'''' high-end collection with 20 different swatch books so far, supposed to compliment Kravet''''s total of 74,000 SKUs in all of its product lines.

The initial offering of Kravetcouture featured vinyls, 50 SKUs of Chinese silks, embossed, woven or quilted leather and suede combined with 100 SKUs of Italian made raffia; cut pony skin and faux reptile skin, metallic looks and an Italian made cork upholstery with a soft hand.

Chenille, the longstanding upholstery trend, was rarely mentioned.

In an effort that spanned 30 months, Tella and her colleague Erin Templeton, senior designer, focused on any area where they could lend their magic to Kravet''''s overall collections. Fashion fabrics like Kate Spade nylon and Fendi''''s patent leather looks were borrowed for the home collection. Tella took unexpected combinations of materials like metallic gold prints on linen cloth; vinylized linen and stretch fabric for upholstery.

"We were given the assignment to design products not available anywhere else-half converted by Kravet and the balance purchased worldwide," she said.

Kravet, considered the largest fabric wholesaler in the world today, is seeking outside design help in many of its new product offerings to insure fresh looks. F&FI
