April 26, 2002
High Point, NC (USA) - King Textiles is capitalizing on a longtime partnership with a Chinese sourcing agent named S. K. Chang under which the company imports Chinese fabrics. In a new effort, Chang and family-owned King Textiles have opened a cut-and-sew operation in the Shanghai area.
"We''ll be cutting and sewing furniture parts, bedding, draperies, pillows and slipcovers," said Matthew Underwood, King Textiles sales manager.
The cut-and-sew gives King an entree to the home fashions market. "We''ll do wide-width, piece-dyed, yarn-dyed, heat-transfer. Right now we''re up to 110-inch and working on doing 120-inch in certain items," said Underwood.
The firm will continue importing furnishings fabrics, Underwood said. "For furniture it''s typically the rayon chenille product, - $4.95-$10.95. The majority of the goods will fall somewhere around $6 a yard."
"Right now we''re bringing 10,000 yards in house. Once we start placing orders we''ll starting bringing in containerloads. We''re going to be offering about 20 SKUs, between the rayon chenilles and a yarn-dyed washed product made of cotton and polyester."
King is working with Diversified Textiles to cover the New York market. The has retains independent representation throughout the rest of the country, including the Midwest, the West Coast, Texas and North Carolina. "Everything comes out of our High Point office. That''s where the goods will land and we''ll do some drop shipping to customers in the future."
King Textiles started 1.5 - 2 years ago and was known formerly as King America. Harvey Underwood and S. K. Chang have partnered in business ventures for about 6 years. "We''re godparents here to his children in the states so it''s not just business, but it''s a friendship that we''ve developed." F&FI
