Justin David Buys David Dee & Co.
August 1, 2005
EL CAJON, California — David Dee & Company of Hollywood, Florida, has been sold to Justin David Textiles here, near San Diego for an undisclosed price.
Justin David will operate the business under the David Dee & Company brand with the same Dee sales force and with a key employee, Suzie Ephraim, production manager. Dee is a well known cruise ship and hospitality specialist. The purchase of David Dee & Company will put Justin David solidly in the hospitality business for the first time, according to David Feldman, vice president of the 50-year-old company owned by his father Bernard Feldman.
Justin David generated at least 20 percent of its sales in hospitality but was not well known in the marketplace. It is expected that David Dee will go a long way in putting them on the hospitality map, a source says.
David Dee, founder of the sold company, will continue as an independent consultant with Justin David for at least two years but Dee says he expects to do some other things he will announce in the near future.
Dee says he was severely affected with the bankruptcy and plant closing of Campo Brummen, a transfer printer based in Brummen, Holland which did as much as 90 percent of David Dee's printing, it was learned. Other converters were affected in the U.S. but none as badly as Dee who did almost all of his work at the plant.
When Campo Brummen closed at year end 2004, Dee's screens were effectively locked up in the Campo Brummen plant. Ultimately, this put Dee in a financial strait jacket—he had orders but he couldn't produce them from the screens in the Campo Brummen plant. The only thing he could do was find a white knight in Justin Feldman who bought the screens back from Campo Co-Print, the new entity that was formed in March from the previous Campo Brummen plant.
Campo Co-Print also chose to no longer do business in America which further compounded Dee's problems. As part of the Dee sale, Justin David also purchased the design archives from Dee and certain physical assets of the Dee Company in Miami "Our Customers were not affected in anyway," Ephriam says. "We made all of our production runs and deliveries as normal for a seamless transition."
