Rubin and Jones Tie Under the Desert Sun, But Countback Gives Victory to Jones
Dubai (UAE) — "You want a quote?" one golfer asked as he sauntered into the Dubai Creek Clubhouse with his sweat-soaked shirt sticking to his body. "IT'S HOT OUT!"
Temperatures reached 100˚F as the tournament ended, sending the sweaty golfers running for relief to the cool confines of the clubhouse where they partook of steak, potatoes, stir-fried vegetables, and various other appetizers and desserts.
"You need an air-conditioned golf course," one golfer told INDEX organizer Audrey Reading.
If it wasn't the highlight of the trip to Dubai, the golf tournament was at least an opportunity for these 28 businessmen to unwind and relax together.
"We're crazy Americans," said one golfer. "We like to enjoy ourselves. But don't write that.
"You want the truth? In the U.S., we're the fiercest competitors," he said, pointing to the man sitting next to him. "We'd cut each other's heads off. But internationally, we love everyone."
He pointed again to the man next to him and said, "I even let this son-of-a-bitch drive the cart today."
So it went at the post-tournament luncheon.
Wiley Jones of Shaw International (U.S.A.) shot a 37 to take home the trophy. Jeff Rubin of Edgar Fabrics (U.S.A.), who won the tournament last year also shot a 37 and was declared the runner-up after a countback.
For the second consecutive year, Shahin Khodjasteh of Al Aqili won the trophy for the longest drive. He cracked the long ball on the 18th hole.
