Intertextile Grows, Forces Messe to Add Space

January 5, 2001

Shanghai — A swelling Intertextile exhibitor list required Messe Frankfurt to increase its exhibition space, from 12,000 square meters in 1999 to 22,000 square meters this year. It accommodated the demand for space by holding the sixth edition of Intertextile in two exhibition venues.

Roughly two-thirds of the exhibitors were housed in the ShanghaiMart, exhibiting apparel fabrics and accessories, while home textiles companies occupied the first and second levels of the INTEX Shanghai.

Taking the helm as "Partner Country" for Intertextile 2000, the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade (ICE) in Shanghai organized a display pavilion of 127 companies from the textile heartland of Europe. Prestigious textile associations, including Comocrea, Ideabiella and Pratotrade (apparel fabrics), plus Associazione Tessile Italiana and Consorzio Promozione Tendaggio Italiano (home textiles) were present, many of them for the first time in China.

"This is the first time a group from Ideabiella has exhibited in China," Dr. Paolo Negri, Chairman of Ideabiella was quoted as saying. "There are a total of 37 companies in the [Ideabiella] group, who are all enthusiastic about the idea of expanding business here. China is a mysterious country, and so our first showing here is an initial investment; an exercise to get a better feel for the market. My impression of the fair is very positive."

Meanwhile, the China Textile Information Center (CTIC) and China Textiles Development Center (CTDC) presented the "China Fabric Trends & Showcase of China Top Fashion Fabrics" at Intertextile 2000. With both static trend displays and dynamic catwalk fashion shows, the events were designed to show Chinese-made quality fabrics to both domestic and international garment-makers, and thus to help increase competitiveness of Chinese fabrics in the world market. Visitors said they were extremely enthusiastic about the concept of Chinese trends and design, and the catwalk models played to a packed auditorium at every show. F&FI
