Hisar Expanding Export

January 13, 2003

Hisar, one of the largest upholstery mills in Turkey, is expanding export by 25 percent. As part of this effort, Hisar shows its line at seven fairs including the Moscow and Ukrainian Furniture Fairs and the Polish Furniture Fair, Poznan. Hisar is growing its business in the U.S.A., Holland, Spain, Scandinavia, U.K. and France. It has been selling to Poland and Greece for awhile. Recently, a major American mill approached Hisar to make a portion of its line.

The Hisar brand is made by Marmara Mensucat. Hisar produces jacquard upholstery beginning at $4 for the U.S.A. and for Europe in the $5 to $7 range. ''China is making goods at $2. We're not interested in that business,'' said owner Omer Faruk Topbas.

The parent company was started by his father, Osman, grandfather and grand uncles Ebubekar and Abiddin in 1973. Three years ago, prompted by the devaluation of the Turkish lira, Omer's uncle Ebubekar Topbas started Esa, another upholstery mill. Kadifeteks, another large and well known upholstery mill in Turkey is owned by another branch of the Topbas family. F&FI
