Cahan Rebounds as Customers Return

January 17, 2003

Bursa - Cahan, an upholstery mill that produces gobelin jacquards in the $2 to $3 price range, is winning back clients who were lured by cheap prices to take their business to Chinese mills, said Esra Cahantimur, wife and partner to Orhan Cahantimur, third-generation owner of the mill.

After a brief setback to Chinese distributors, the mill is back on its feet servicing customers from Scotland, Slovenia, Russia and the Maldive Islands, among others. ''Our own designs were copied in China,'' she said. ''The Chinese produced their version for $1 to $1.50 and our original version is superior at $2 to $2.50.''

''At first, our customers tried to buy in China,'' Cahantimur said. ''But they came running back to us when delivery dates were missed badly and the quality was poor.'' A small quality of Cahan products is sold in the U.S., including wide width for bedding fabric production and chenille in the $3 to $6 price range. Now the company said it is concentrating on gradually developing a greater export business there.

''Several years ago, an American mill tried to capture our entire production for export to America, but we said no Cahantimur said,'' ''We already had several customers in the States and we wanted to maintain those accounts.''

Umit Soiysal, will aid the mill, serving as Turkish export agent. F&FI
