BakaSave Absorbs Harmful Gases and Odors, Company Says

December 17, 2002

Bamberg, Germany — A new active agent incorporated into interior sun and light protection fabrics is claimed to have positive health benefits. The substance, called BakaSave, is now being added by German textile company Bamberger Kaliko to fabrics used to make roller blinds.

BakaSave is a catalyst that absorbs harmful gases such as formaldehyde as well as nicotine and other unpleasant odors, binding them onto the fabric surface and transforming them into harmless water and carbon dioxide.

The effectiveness of BakaSave has been tested at the Thuringia-Vogelland Textile Research Institute, where it was established that the product will break up: formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, nicotine, ammonia, acetic acid, trimethylamine (gas with a fishy smell), hydrogen sulfide (foul smelling, very toxic gas) and methylthiol (distinctly rotten smelling gas).

The deodorization (absorption and dissolution) of gases and odors is brought about by chemical reactions with organic nitrogenous compounds and metal salts. BakaSave catalyses these reactions and retains its chemical properties permanently, said Bamberger Kaliko.

Bamberger Kaliko said one square meter of BakaSave material in a room of 50 cubic meters will break down 0.331 ppm of formaldehyde into water and carbon monoxide within 24 hours.

BakaSave also absorbs cigarette smoke without reaching a saturation point. F&FI
