'AFGO,' a Hit in Its First Edition
August 13, 2002
Glen Head, N.Y. (USA) — As companies in the textile industry diversify and change ownership, so too do the industry's golf tournaments. Such is the case for HFPA's annual golf tournament, no longer presided over by HFPA and dubbed "AFGO" by this year's organizers.
The newly named tournament also broadened its admission to include "anyone who has something to do with the fabrics industry," according to Bruce Resch, manager of contract sales at Richloom and AFGO organizer. Thus the new name: AFGO, which, Resch said, stands for All Fabrics Golf Outing. "It was a better mix," Resch said. "We had some people from the 'rag club,' (over-the-counter fabrics) and several people who were never there before. We also had people from Brylane, the winner of the HFPA 2002 Retailer of the year."
In all, about 140 people partook of a day of golf, tennis, swimming and food at the Glen Cove Golf Club.
Resch became a chief organizer of the tournament this year after the HFPA board voted against holding it. "I ran it with compatriots from Richloom, Santee - they handled money, logged entries - and Croscill."
Resch, who noted that donations from companies in the industry made the tournament possible, also had help from Crossway Travels and U.S. Airways.
"I had several phone calls a day later. It was really nice. The people who run that club are wonderful. The course was in professional shape. It could get bigger and it will," Resch promised.
"In this economy we're working harder, those of us who are still standing. We deserve a day like this." F&FI
